Tips to Get Your Car Summer Ready

As the season’s change, so should your car maintenance. To keep your car ready for whatever adventures summer has in-store, follow these easy tips.

Check your windshield

If your windshield currently has any cracks, it’s best to get it repaired before that Texas heat really kicks in and makes them larger. Temperature change and general vibrations from driving can cause these small cracks to turn into big problems, and getting your windshield repaired or replaced sooner rather than later can save you money down the road. Windshield cracks can pose a major danger to you and your passengers during the summer months as they reduce the stability of your windshield. Be on the lookout for any cracks or dings in your windshield over the summer and contact a local reputable windshield repair/replacement shop.

Protect your windshield from temperature change

Your windshield can take major damage when the temperature changes so it’s important to take small precautions to avoid cracking or damage this summer. Although the Texas heat can be sweltering, try to air out hot air by rolling the windows down before turning on your A/C, the drastic temperature change can damage your windshield and cause cracking. If you can, opt for turning on the A/C to low versus high as soon as you enter your vehicle, this helps with temperature change causing cracks as well.

You can also help with temperature changes in your car by parking in the shade or buying a sunshade, this reduces the heat to the interior of your car. Additionally, blocking the interior from harmful UV rays helps protect the upholstery of your car from fading.

Get your car inspected

While Texas only requires an inspection once a year, it’s important to get your car inspected before the summer starts, this will help ensure you’re road trip ready and that the summer heat doesn’t make small issues in your car much bigger. At McGavock, we offer complimentary multi-point inspections that offer peace of mind.

Opt for an oil change before a road trip

If you’re planning on a long road trip, or simply driving more often this summer, your oil change should match your busy schedule. Oil changes keep your engine clean, help your car consume less gas, and keep your engine from overheating especially when there’s extra added heat during the summer. There’s never an issue with getting an oil change early, but major issues could arise from putting a change off for too long.

Check your tires

Summer and winter cause temperature changes that can affect your car’s tire pressure and put you at higher risk for a blowout or flat tire. Don’t forget to check your spare tire! The heat can cause your tires to lose air and need replacing much quicker, even your spare. By keeping an eye on your car’s tire pressure, you can actually improve your gas mileage on longer trips as well.

We hope these tips will help keep you and your car safe & prepared for all your summer activities. No matter what your plans for the summer may be, McGavock is ready to serve you!

Brake Maintenance at McGavock Nissan

Brakes are quite possibly the most important component of any vehicle, and our factory-trained service technicians take exceptional care when replacing or adjusting your brake pads and rotors. Just like any other mechanism in your vehicle, your brakes need regular maintenance. Whether the brake pads and rotors need replacing, or the brake fluid needs to be flushed, we’re here to help you get back on the road safely. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while on the road and taking your vehicle in for regular maintenance.

Brake Pads and Rotors

The brake pads and accompanying rotors are the main point of contact between your vehicle’s braking system and the tires. These mechanisms deteriorate more easily than other components and require more frequent maintenance. The heat caused by the friction between your tires and the brake pads cause the pads to wear down. You can determine whether your brake pads and rotors need maintenance when :

  • You notice you need to depress your brake pedal further in order to stop
  • Smell a burning odor when braking
  • The distance it takes to stop increases drastically

You can check your brake pads and rotors at home by simply removing the tire. If you notice any wear or damage, replace them immediately, or give our service department a call to get your vehicle in.

Brake Fluid

While brake pads and rotors are the primary mechanisms, brake fluid is the messenger between you and your car’s braking system. When you press down on your brake pedal, pressure builds and is transferred from the brake fluid to the rest of the braking system mechanisms. This pressure is then transferred back to the brake pads and rotors. Over time, moisture can build up in the braking fluid, causing damage and corrosion of the metal components of the brakes. Brake fluid should be checked and replaced every 25,000 miles. Give us a call to schedule your next maintenance appointment to get your brake fluid changed.

Brake Lines and Parts

Along with checking brake pads and replacing brake fluid, it’s important to occasionally bleed your brake lines and replace/upgrade other brake parts as needed. Bleeding the brake lines simply means removing the small amounts of air that get into the lines. Upgrading brake parts when necessary will improve the longevity and performance of your vehicle’s braking system.

New vs. Pre-Owned Vehicles: Which one is Right for You?

All Vehicles are Unique

No two people are exactly alike, and neither are the vehicles we drive. Some people enjoy the latest and greatest designs with integrated technology to match. Others prefer something that gets them from point A to point B and remains reliable, even if it’s not the latest model on the road. At McGavock Nissan, we understand that each person has specific needs for their next car. We’re here to help you find a car that matches your lifestyle and provides the best functionality possible, all while being cost-effective. So, do you drive off in a brand new car, or get behind the wheel of a certified pre-owned vehicle? Let’s take a look at which one matches you!

New Vehicles: Innovative Investments

Owning a new vehicle is an exciting experience- especially for those who enjoy the latest technology inside the car, while admiring the stylish design on the outside. This technology and modern styling hold their own against the test of time, so customers can enjoy their new car longer. New cars are often seen by buyers as an investment. This purchase involves a down payment and the buyer intends to drive the car for many years to come.

New 2021 Nissan Armada

At McGavock Nissan, we provide a variety of financial options and vehicle incentives for qualified buyers to drive away with lower monthly payments. Be sure to come see us for the best deal on your new car! Lastly, the tax, title, and license process with a new vehicle is quick and efficient, and the vehicle’s warranty is still in effect. If these criteria match what you’re looking for in a vehicle, you should consider purchasing a new car!

Pre-Owned Vehicles: Functionally Cost-Effective

Pre-Owned vehicles are practical, cost-efficient, and have a wide variety of options for buyers with specific needs. When pre-owned vehicles are certified through a dealership, they have lower mileage and are in “like new” condition. Pre-owned buyers expect excellent functionality while remaining within their budget. These vehicles often have a remaining warranty, or customers can work with the dealership to purchase a new warranty for the car. Doing this ensures that the vehicle is always covered.

Pre-Owned 2017 Honda Civic

Also, many pre-owned vehicles have similar features and technology to their newer counterparts.  With this in mind, buyers find the best of both worlds in an affordable vehicle with upgraded features. If you are looking for a car that gets you where you need to go and is budget-friendly, a pre-owned vehicle is right for you!

What Car Will You Choose?

Spring Car Maintenance at McGavock Nissan

Change the Filters in your Air Vents

Spring is here, and it’s time to clean out your car’s air filters! Dust, pollen, and many other particulates clog your air filters and increase your chances of experiencing allergies while driving. Our service department recommends owners change their air filters every 15-30,000 miles, depending on their driving habits.  City driving does not cause as much pollutant intake as country driving, so be sure to keep that in mind when considering a filter change.  Contact our service department today for more information on how to change your specific vehicle’s air filters, or you can book an appointment with one of our service technicians.

Rotate Before You Roll Out

We recommend you rotate your tires every six months or 6,000 to 8,000 miles to prevent blowouts and maintain steady wear on your tread.  A good way to remember when it’s time to get the tires rotated is to get it done every other oil change.

Maintain Your Inspection for Everyone’s Protection

Getting your vehicle inspected is not only the law, but it ensures that your car is in the best possible shape for everything from a trip to the grocery store to a trip across the country.  Inspecting elements like fluid levels, headlight function, brake response, and more will keep your car safe for you and everyone else on the road.

New Year, New Outlook, and New Goals for McGavock Nissan

2021 is the glimmering light at the end of a bleak tunnel for us all. This is the first year ever it seems that people are making it a goal to simply connect with others when it was merely a common pleasantry in year’s past.  Some people are keeping with the age-old resolution to improve themselves in some way, whether it’s to get in better physical health, improve their outlook on life, or improve their relationships with others. Other people are making it their mission to give back, learn something new, or get a pet.  The wonderful people at McGavock Nissan are preparing for the new year with resolutions of their own, and we are excited to share them with all of you. Whatever your resolution is for this new year, we hope you achieve it ten-fold, surrounded by those who love and support you all the way.

Andrew Noble, Director of Video Production for McGavock, says his New Year’s resolution is to get in shape, lose weight, be more kind and giving to the people around him, and become more disciplined.

Mallory Barnett, Inbound Marketing and Communications Strategist has made it her goal to be more assertive when planning out and reaching her goals in life.  She wants to use her optimism and motivation to achieve everything she sets her mind to both at work and in her personal endeavors.  Lastly, she aspires to build stronger relationships with others and learn a new language in 2021.

Leslie Palacios, a sales professional, says her resolutions are to pay off all debt and to start remodeling her house.  Her personal goal is to read more self-improvement and motivational books.

Lastly, Kate Silva, Director of Digital Marketing, says she will create every single day (Photograph, drawing, etc), even if it’s only 10 minutes a day.

She wants to push herself out of her comfort zone by experimenting with more complex projects or just trying something new.  She wants to focus on projects that fulfill her creatively and say yes to projects that excite and inspire her.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it would be the fact that we as humans are indeed strong, resilient, and fully capable of anything we set our minds to, no matter the setbacks.  The world has endured the lion’s share of struggles, pain, and loss this year, but 2021 is a new beginning for us all.  Let’s take it head-on and make 2021 the most memorable year to date.

McGavock Nissan’s Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is finally here, and for many, the holiday looks a little different this year.  Families all over our community are planning the safest possible trick-or-treating experience for their little ones, and McGavock Nissan is here to help! Check out some of our best tips for trick-or-treating safely this Halloween.

1.) Keep a safe distance

When trick-or-treating with your kids, keep in mind the importance of keeping a safe distance of at least 6 feet away from others.  Keeping this distance minimizes the risk of coming in contact with any germs at any point and time.

2.) Wear a mask if you feel it’s necessary

If you or your child are not already wearing some kind of Halloween mask, we recommend wearing a mask when coming in contact with other people (accepting candy at your neighbor’s door, talking with friends and other parents, etc.) to keep yourself and others safe.

3.) Keep hand sanitizer handy

Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with you to disinfect your hands between ringing doorbells or touching door handles.  Preventing the spread of germs to your hands will further prevent the spread of those germs to your body.

4.) Trick-or-Treat from your car

Ask your neighbors if they’ve considered giving out candy to trick-or-treaters in their vehicles this Halloween.  This is a safe, fun way to get your candy fix without risking catching any illnesses.  Apps like NextDoor allow people in your neighborhood to network with each other, so this would be a great opportunity to organize a drive-thru trick-or-treat this Halloween!

We hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween! Feel free to share your Halloween photos with us on our Facebook page!

McGavock’s Mascot: The Man Behind the Frog

You all know Mac, the McGavock mascot, but do you know the man behind the frog? Brandon Buzzank wears the mascot costume with pride, and his journey with the McGavocks is quite a unique one.  One day while Brandon was getting his car serviced at the Lubbock dealership, he decided to help out the other customers by handing out popcorn and waters.  Brent McGavock saw what Brandon was doing and hired him on the spot.  Brandon was diagnosed with ASD, or Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Brandon Buzzank poses next to Karin McCay during an interview for KCBD.

Brent had just the job for Brandon, and he’s made kids and adults alike smile ever since.  Brandon loves wearing the mascot costume and welcoming customers in the dealership during events or just a typical day. Brandon isn’t just a professional mascot, he also created ways to make the car shopping process faster and more efficient.  Have you noticed the barcode stickers on the front of our vehicles? If you scan that barcode on your phone, it will direct you straight to the website with all the information on that particular vehicle.

Buzzank holding “The Frog with ASD,” a story written about him by local news anchor, Karin McCay

Now, Brandon’s story has an even larger platform. Local news anchor, Karin McCay wrote a children’s book about Brandon and how he excels at everything he does while living life with ASD.  This book teaches kids that different is special, and we all have that one talent that makes us stand out above the rest.  The book is not available yet, but it’s coming soon and we’ll update everyone when it becomes available!
